Sir,
In pursuance of my application for the appointment of Colonial Surgeon at
Hong Kong, I beg respectfully to submit to your notice the following statement:-
1st.-I am a M.D. of the University of Edinburgh;
Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh;
Fellow of the Royal Society, Edinburgh;
Fellow of the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Edinburgh, &c., &c.
2nd. I was in extensive private practice in Shanghae, China, for nearly ten years, which I left
after amassing what I believed to be an independence.
3rd. While in Shanghae I built and successfully established, at my own risk and cost, an
European Hospital, which is still the only one of the kind in the North of China.
4th. From China I went to the Crimea, where I was employed as a Staff Surgeon, and for
service there I wear the Crimean medal and Sebastopol clasp.
5th. Since my return to this country I have been engaged in practice, and hold the appointment of Surgeon to the New Town Dispensary in Edinburgh. I have also been devoting much time in adding to my professional and scientific attainments.
6th. Should I be so fortunate as to obtain this appointment, I shall endeavour to the best of my ability to maintain the high position it attained in the person of my late friend Dr. Harland.
